An afternoon with Native American Artist, Healer, Teacher, Virgil Sampson
JUNE 11, 2011
1PM - 4:30 PM
Virgil Sampson is of Coast Salish and Nez Perce origin. His father is from Tsartlip First Nation while his mother was born in Lapwai, Idaho. Virgil is a self taught incredibly inspired and gifted artist who loves to share through teaching his gifts to others. His main influences have been his brother John Sampson, Charles Elliot and Joe Wilson. Virgil’s teachings center on healing and the spiritual meanings of his paintings which he usually produces on his hand crafted drums, mandalas as well as limited edition prints.
In this, the first of a series of planned workshops, Virgil will lead the participants though ancient teachings around the symbolism and deeper spiritual meanings of your personal mandala.
Mandala art has been used throughout the world for self-expression, spiritual transformation, and personal growth. The word mandala is ancient Sanskrit for circle and is seen by Tibetans as a diagram of the cosmos. It is used by Native Americans in healing rituals and in Christian cathedrals the labyrinth is a mandalic pattern used as a tool for meditation.
The Native American mandala is created in honor of a people who understand the deeper undercurrents of thought, nature, and life.
They know that our thoughts can sometimes mask the deeper messages that come from our hearts. The Native American mandala is used to uncover the deeper meanings of our hearts, and assists in observing our motivations in life in connection with the grander scale of the universe.
Native Americans have a profound respect and understanding for the movement of Spirit. They know that all things are connected, and united. By incorporating the Native American mandala as a tool, we can begin to understand the connectedness of the Universe.
Focusing on the mandala and its symbolism allows our mind to cease its constant chatter. Our thoughts begin to delve deeper in the mist of thought that dwells closer to the realm of Spirit. The mandala gives the chattering mind a point of focus, something to digest, while the Spirit connection is made, and clarity of the heart and soul is reached.
